et GAlley REviewerI just finished reading Flickers of Light in a Nazi Darkness by Lisa Waller Rogers, and it’s a really moving read. I read a lot of historical books, but this one is special because it skips the boring battle maps and focuses entirely on the ordinary people in the Netherlands who risked everything.
The book starts right when Germany invaded in May 1940 and goes through the scary Nazi raids of 1942. It shows how Dutch Jews had their rights slowly stripped away until they weren’t even safe in their own homes.
The author tells the story through short biographies of regular folks who became secret heroes overnight. You get to read about everyday people who learned how to forge fake IDs, build secret rooms in safe houses, smuggle extra food rations, and sneak Jewish children away to safety. The author calls them “flickers of light” because their small acts of bravery brought hope during the darkest years of the war.
